Every vehicle in the UK needs to be tested each year, to ensure it complies with at least the minimum road safety and environmental standards. If you have a vehicle that is more than 3 years old, it will need an MOT test.
Your MOT test can be done at any time before the expiry date but to preserve your existing expiry date, you will need to have your MOT test carried out up to 29 days before the expiry date. This provides you time to organise and book in your MOT.
How long does an MOT take?
It can take approximately between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

An MOT isn’t the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesn’t check its general mechanical condition.
The law requires that everyone who uses a vehicle on the road must keep it in a roadworthy condition at all times. Once a year, road worthiness is checked in the interests of road safety and the environment by the test known as the “MOT”.
The first test is required once a car is three years old. The MOT is a minimum standard which your car should meet at all times; it is not a standard you should bring your car up to once a year. The MOT looks at some important items on your car to see that they meet the key legal minimum requirements at the time of test.
Some of the components to be inspected include vehicle structure, speedometer condition and operation, absence of leaks in the fuel system, security and condition of fuel pipes & hoses, exhaust emissions, seat belt operation, condition and security, brake condition, operation & performance, tyre and wheel condition, windscreen wipers and steering & suspension condition.

About the MOT
The first test is required once a vehicle is three years old. There are different rules if you use it as a taxi. When your vehicle is tested, the MOT looks at some important items to see if it meets the legal requirements.
You should be aware that the MOT certificate is not a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of a vehicle.
When your vehicle needs testing
If a vehicle is registered with no prior use on the road, the MOT will be required three years after the date of registration. For example, a vehicle registered ‘from new’ on 1 April 2011 will require its MOT no later than 1 April 2014.
If a vehicle is used prior to registration, as would be the case with an import, the MOT will be required three years from the end of the year of manufacture. For example a vehicle manufactured at any time in 2011 will require an MOT no later than 31 December 2014. There is no grace period given after these dates.
An MOT can be carried out at any time
If the vehicle is tested within the calendar month prior to when the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate i.e. if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2014, and the vehicle was presented on or after 2 March 2014, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2015.
The same rule would also apply when the vehicle is taken in within a calendar month of its first MOT. In this case, the vehicle owner would need to present their registration document.
If the vehicle is tested earlier than one month before its due date, the MOT will only run for twelve months.
The MOT test ensures that the vehicle meets at least the minimum road safety and environmental standards autotecnic are an approved MOT testing station.
